Profile: Hannah, 26 Studied: Psychology, University of Cape Town; MSc in International Health Policy, LSE Position: Junior PR Executive, Roche Products Time in Industry: 18 months |
I was attracted to the pharmaceutical industry because I knew I could apply my knowledge of a number of diverse disciplines within one sector. Plus I was keen to have the opportunity to work in different departments and locations.
This role was advertised at a graduate careers fair – I knew immediately that it was for me! The interview process was lengthy but went smoothly and the recruitment team kept in regular contact with me, which was reassuring. I prepared by researching Roche’s products in detail as well as reading some more in-depth materials about current issues in the industry.
Initially, I worked across the portfolio of products often facilitating ABPI approval of documents. I was also involved in drafting materials and product campaigns. I now have a more in-depth focus on a few key products.
The scope for promotion and specifically cross-divisional working is in the hands of the individual. In fact I would say the ability to apply yourself to a number of different roles is essential. When I first joined the company, I was encouraged to hear how many people had moved around and taken on a variety of roles.
The most rewarding part of my job is knowing that I contribute to the availability of drugs that save lives and can improve and extend good quality of life. The frustration is that I don’t have enough time to get involved in all the projects I’d like.
What have you learnt since starting out?
How integral the ABPI Code of Practice is to day-to-day working in the industry.
Is the industry undergoing any changes?
It is constantly changing. A development that is very much in focus at the moment is the increased focus on personalised medicine and linking diagnostics to treatment.
